Las Cruces is New Mexico's second largest city and has a population of about 90,000 excluding university and college enrollment of 20,000 students. Dona Ana County population is 185,000. Situated beneath the rugged countenance of the Organ Mountains, Las Cruces basks in 350 sun days along the rich farming valley of the Rio Grande. Established in 1849, our elevation is 3,896 feet above sea level. The area's largest employer is New Mexico State University with the fastest growing occupations in computer and system software engineering. Our unemployment rate is 4.1% as of November 2006 which is slightly below the national average of 4.3%. With an enrollment of 24,000 students, Las Cruces Public Schools is the second largest school district in New Mexico. We have 24 elementary (pre-K-5), seven middle (6-8) and four high schools (9-12). Las Cruces is home to many attractions including art galleries, museums, performing art venues, theaters, annual festivals and historic old Mesilla.
